Love
You can’t give what you don’t have.
Ella came home from school in a very bad mood. When h er mom hugged her and asked what was wrong, she said, "Tommy said he loved me at school today."
Ella's mom looked shocked that this upset her daughter. She said, "Ella, Sweetie, that is such a nice thing for someone to say. I was worried someone had called you bad names."
Ella quickly replied, "But Mom, I don't love him back. I love my dog, Rocky. My face turned bright red, and I haven't been able to talk to Tommy since."
Ella's mom said, "Sweetie, it is time we talk about the word love. There is no reason to avoid Tommy. What if you simply say thank you? We can love friends, family, pets, God, our country, food, music, and many things in life. Love comes in many forms. It is far too early to be concerned about romantic love in second grade. And you enjoy doing puzzles and coloring with Tommy."
"Ok, should I apologize to him?" Ella asked.
"Ella, we show love through kindness, appreciation, empathy and respect. I suspect Tommy feels your love, and that is why he told you. Love is our sole purpose in life. We do that through acts of kindness and accepting everyone despite our differences. You are a divine being, Ella; we all are, and love is our natural essence. You clearly feel bad, which is the voice of love inside of you. Tommy would appreciate your asking if he wants to do a puzzle with you. We show our love through actions and kind words."
"Thanks, Mom. Now I can't wait to go to school tomorrow," Ella exclaimed with relief.
